Have you heard of this? I’m sorry I was out of town (meaning I didn’t watch any news!) and missed the actual world events, but here is a really nice recap. After you read the rest of this, take a couple of minutes and watch the pictures go by. It’s really interesting to me that so many countries are involved.
So just what is 350, anyway? The world’s leading climate scientists have determined the highest safe level of CO2. That would be 350 parts per million. That’s the number that the CO2 level needs to return to in order to be safe for our planet Earth. What is it now? Around 390 is the latest rating I have seen.
The best way to lower this number is to reduce the amount of carbon taken from the ground and put back into our air. That, of course, means using fewer fossil fuels. It also means allowing the forests, especially in South America, time to develop new growth. Difficult, I know. But our world is changing and we need to change with it.
How can you help? The simple answer is to drive less and drive a more fuel efficient automobile. Depending on your community and what it offers, perhaps you could take public transportation. Car pooling is very effective and many cities have lots for parking a car and meeting up with fellow riders. Ride your bike. Walking is a great idea! I know these options are not always available but as you are driving in your car, consider if you could have gotten where you are going by a different means of transportation.
Are you shopping at the local mall and only want the stores on each end of the mall? Don’t park at one end and then move your car to the other. Park at one end or the middle and walk. You will get some great exercise and be doing a very small part to reduce fossil fuel usage. In fact, every time you park your car, consider how far you can walk to avoid moving your car multiples times.
Running all your errands on one day also will save on fuel consumption. Make a list so that you don’t have to go out multiple times to get the things you forgot the first time!
Yes, we need to reduce our dependency on the automobile. Yes, in our country that is very difficult. But give it a little extra thought as you plan your day. Every little bit will help your Earth.
